If a new pair of sneakers pinches and presses at home during the second try, it is returned. Very easily. Most dealers are accommodating and refund the full purchase price. When buying a new car, things look different: Who is dissatisfied then, because the car is too small or the motorization is too weak, this bad buy is not so easy again. The dealer usually only takes the vehicle back from the purchase price with considerable reductions. Even if the car is pristine and fully paid, it has barely miles on the clock and the customer is willing to order a more expensive model as an alternative.
A loss of value is inevitable
“In such a situation, only one thing helps: keep calm, do not rush things and look for alternatives,” advises Arnulf Volkmar Thiemel from the ADAC. When selling a very young used car, a high loss of value is generally to be expected – there is no way around it. However, if you are patiently looking for a suitable buyer for the car, you can at least influence how much money he actually loses in the end.
A loss in value of up to 40 percent alone through the initial registration of a new car on a private holder is certainly conceivable, according to the industry service Eurotax-Schwacke. On average across all vehicle segments, it is around 20 percent, with luxury cars usually losing more than smaller models.
Technically justified, the loss of value is not
Technically justified is the high loss of value of extremely young vehicles without defects usually not, stresses Thiemel. “It’s more about the general appreciation for new things and the special relationship between car buyers and new cars,” he explains. “If you’re prepared to spend a lot of money on your dream car, you want to design and equip the car as you like, and then you’re the only one willing to compromise, even if a second-hand car is reasonably individual, works well, and is as good as new is – he is just almost new. “
The more exclusive and expensive a model is, the more likely it is, because the more concrete and personal the customer wishes are usually, says the ADAC expert. Many buyers awaken a new car very special emotions.
Loss of value is greatest at the dealer
Therefore, with a view to the money, it is usually the worst idea that a new car sales mistake can be reversed directly at the dealer: “The dealer has to find exactly the right customer for the car, especially for a luxury model, which is not easy”, explains Thiemel. The fastest he could resell the car only for a bargain price, and he also wants to earn something. The receipt then gets the first owner with a comparatively measly proceeds.
If you want to deliver an unloved new car to a brand-new car dealership, you have to be prepared for an even greater loss. “Under certain circumstances, the non-brand dealer will resell the car to another dealer, because he does not want to have it on his farm, and he has to calculate this as a businessman when buying the vehicle,” said Thiemel.
Private sale means the least loss of value
Unfortunate new car owners therefore only the more uncomfortable private sale remains. “The easiest way to find a buyer who accepts a second-hand, secondhand car and still pays good money,” says the ADAC expert. It makes sense to explore a good price on the basis of offers in car sales portals on the Internet or in newspaper ads and then try patiently to achieve the maximum price. Especially in convertibles, the season can affect the resale value: In the spring, there is usually more money for open cars than in autumn or winter.
There is no 14-day right of return
A widespread mistake is a fundamental 14-day right of return for goods that are flawless, but the buyer suddenly not like it, says the Hagener lawyer Jörg Elsner. “This applies only to so-called distance selling transactions, which were concluded exclusively via the Internet or by telephone, letter, fax or e-mail,” he explains. And that is in the estimation of Thomas Bradler of the consumer center North Rhine-Westphalia with new car purchases unusual.
In addition, customers should be able to compensate for the loss of value of a product after the cancellation of a bad sale at a distance, so Bradler. Therefore, a car dealer could make in this exceptional case in a new car after the first registration cuts from the original purchase price.
Beware of the private sale of high quality cars
Particularly with the private sale of high-quality cars applies special caution: prospective buyers one should receive already alone because of the four-eyes-principle always in pairs, so that the business cleanly goes over the stage, advises the ADAC. During the test drive, the vehicle owner should accompany the prospective customer. If one agrees to a trade, he best hands out his car and papers only after he has received the sum agreed in the purchase contract. For cash transactions buyers and sellers should go to the bank together and deposit the money directly – there it will be checked for counterfeits. Checks a car salesman prefers to refuse: they can still burst in retrospect.
